During the trip, we'll dive in some of the world's most spectacular cenotes, including Dreamgate, Angelita, Dos Ojos, and Kukulkan. The cenotes of Mexico are among the finest dive sites on Earth, which is why we return there every year.

DIVING

We will be enjoying recreational dives in some of the most breathtaking cenotes in Mexico. The cenotes were formed around 1.5 million years ago during the last Ice Age, when sea levels dropped significantly. Rainwater gradually carved vast underground cave systems beneath the Yucatán Peninsula, creating extraordinary limestone formations such as stalactites, stalagmites and columns. When the glaciers melted and sea levels rose, these caves became flooded, giving birth to the cenotes we know today. There are approximately 3,000 cenotes in Mexico, although only about half have been explored. The connected underwater cave systems extend for more than 500 kilometres, making them among the longest on the planet.

The word "dzonot" in the Mayan language means "deep well". To the ancient Maya, cenotes were sacred gateways to Xibalba, the underworld, connecting the worlds of the living and the dead. They believed the rain god Chaac, the deity of water, vegetation, rain and storms, lived within them. As a result, cenotes became sites of ceremonial offerings, including gold, jade and even human sacrifices. While diving, it is still possible to encounter ancient human remains and archaeological artefacts left behind by pre-Columbian civilisations.

 

REQUIREMENTS

Although local regulations allow divers with an Open Water Diver (OWD) certification to dive in cenotes, in practice these dives can be challenging without sufficient experience. Good buoyancy control, proper trim and confident frog-kick technique are essential. For this reason, we strongly recommend that participants hold at least an Advanced Open Water Diver (AOWD) certification (or an equivalent qualification). All participants must also arrange appropriate **travel and dive insurance** before departure.

 

ACCOMMODATION

Accommodation is provided in spacious two-bedroom apartments with a kitchen and living room. Guests will stay in twin rooms with private bathrooms. Hotel facilities include: Swimming pool, Rooftop terrace with hammocks and barbecue area.

The property is located in **Playa del Carmen**, just a short walk from the beach and **Quinta Avenida (Fifth Avenue)**, the city's famous pedestrian street lined with shops, cafés, restaurants and bars serving excellent local cuisine. A nearby restaurant, just one minute from the hotel, serves breakfast from 7:30 am. Meals are not included.

 

PLAYA DEL CARMEN

Situated on the Caribbean coast, Playa del Carmen lies directly opposite San Miguel de Cozumel, the largest town on Cozumel Island, with regular ferry connections between the two. As the tourism hub of the Yucatán Peninsula, Playa del Carmen offers much more than beautiful beaches. Visitors can enjoy museums, shops, casinos, lively nightlife and the famous Fifth Avenue, making it an ideal destination both above and below the water.

During your stay, you'll have the opportunity to join optional excursions to some of the Yucatán's most famous attractions, including:

  • Cobá
  • Chichén Itzá
  • Cozumel

 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • Passport must be valid for at least 6 months** from the date of travel.
  • Travel and dive insurance are mandatory.
  • Accepted currencies: Mexican Pesos (MXN) and US Dollars (USD).
  • Local time in Playa del Carmen is **6 hours behind Central European Time.
  • Electricity: 110 V, US-style plugs (an adapter is recommended).
  • Local SIM cards can be arranged upon request.
